Hello silver fox, goodbye grandad

Male aesthetics and skincare in Amersham

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with getting older. The aim isn’t to look 25 again. It’s about looking healthy, well rested and good for your age.

More men are taking an interest in their skin and appearance, and why not? You can train, eat well, get a decent haircut and look after your health, so why completely ignore your skin?

At our aesthetic and skin clinic in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, the questions men ask us are often pretty straightforward.

“Why do I look tired all the time?”

“Can I do something about these lines?”

“Why has my skin suddenly aged?”

“What can I actually do that works?”

That last question is an important one.

So, what actually works?

There isn’t one treatment that does everything.

Skin ageing involves changes in collagen, elastin, hydration, pigmentation, fat, muscle and bone. The right approach depends on what you’re actually trying to improve.

Microneedling uses controlled micro-injury to stimulate the skin’s repair response and collagen production. It can be useful for concerns such as skin texture, pores, fine lines and acne scarring.

Skin boosters, including Skinvive, focus more on skin quality and hydration.

Profhilo uses injectable hyaluronic acid and is designed to improve skin hydration and quality rather than simply adding facial volume.

Polynucleotides are regenerative injectable treatments increasingly used to improve skin quality and support tissue repair.

Dermal fillers have a different role. They can be used when the concern relates more to facial structure, proportions or loss of volume, including areas such as the chin and jawline.

We know. That already sounds like a lot.

Over the next few blogs, we’ll break these treatments down properly. What they are, how they work, what the evidence says, who they might suit and, equally importantly, when they’re probably not worth your money.

Because “trust us, it works” isn’t really enough.

What about lines and wrinkles?

Having lines doesn’t mean you need to get rid of them. A few lines can look good. They give a face character.

But sometimes changes in facial movement, skin quality, volume and underlying facial structure can leave you looking more tired or older than you feel.

Understanding what’s actually causing the change is far more useful than simply picking a treatment from a menu.

What if I have no idea what treatment I need?

Good.

You don’t need to arrive at Skin Techniques asking for 2ml of this, a syringe of that and something you saw somebody having on Instagram.

Tell us the problem instead.

“I look knackered.”

“My skin has gone downhill.”

“I hate these lines.”

“I’ve lost my jawline.”

That gives us somewhere much more useful to start.

Age well, don’t fight ageing

Good aesthetics shouldn’t be about pretending you aren’t getting older.

Keep the grey hair. Keep some lines. Keep the things that give your face character.

The aim is to address the things that bother you, while making sure you still look like you.
