What are HD Lips?

HD Lips is an advanced semi-permanent make-up treatment that combines lip definition with a carefully selected wash of colour.

Pigment is implanted into the lips using specialist cosmetic tattooing techniques. Greater attention is given to defining the natural lip border, improving the appearance of symmetry and creating a more even-looking finish across the lips.

Your pigment is selected to complement your natural colouring and preferred result. Once healed, the aim is a polished but natural-looking enhancement rather than a heavily made-up appearance.

HD Lips does not contain dermal filler and does not physically increase the size of the lips.

What it helps

What can HD Lips help with?

HD Lips may be considered for:

  • A faded or less-defined natural lip border
  • Uneven-looking lip colour
  • Mild visual asymmetry within the natural lip shape
  • Pale or faded-looking lips
  • Lips that have lost visible definition over time
  • Clients wanting a more polished lip finish
  • Reducing reliance on everyday lip liner and lipstick
  • Creating the appearance of more defined lips without adding volume

HD Lips can improve colour and definition, but it cannot create the structural projection or physical volume provided by lip filler.

How it works

How do HD Lips work?

Your treatment begins with a consultation to discuss the result you would like, assess your natural lips and select an appropriate pigment.

The natural lip border is carefully mapped before pigment is implanted using a specialist cosmetic tattooing device. Pigment is placed to improve the appearance of definition, symmetry and even colour across the lips.

Immediately afterwards, the lips usually appear brighter, stronger in colour and more swollen than the healed result. The colour then softens as the skin heals.

A complimentary perfecting appointment is carried out approximately eight weeks later. This allows us to assess pigment retention, refine the definition and add colour to any areas that have healed lighter or less evenly.

Our approach

Our personalised approach to semi-permanent make-up

At Skin Techniques, Jess considers your natural lip colour, shape, facial features and preferred level of definition before creating your treatment plan. The proposed colour and outline are discussed with you before pigment is implanted.

Our other semi-permanent make-up treatments include Lip Blush, for a softer wash of natural-looking colour, and Ombré Lips, which creates greater border definition with colour graduating towards the centre.

If you already have pigment in your lips, please tell us before booking. Previous cosmetic tattooing can affect the colour, technique and result available, and laser removal may sometimes need to be considered first.

Your questions

HD Lips FAQs

What is the difference between HD Lips and Lip Blush?

Both treatments use cosmetic tattooing to add semi-permanent colour. Lip Blush focuses on creating a soft, natural-looking tint, while HD Lips places greater emphasis on visible border definition, symmetry and an even, polished finish.

We can help you decide which effect is better suited to your natural lips and preferences.

Do HD Lips make your lips look bigger?

HD Lips do not physically enlarge the lips or add volume. Improving border definition and balancing the appearance of colour may make the natural lip shape appear clearer and more defined.

Treatment must remain within the natural lip tissue. Pigment cannot be used to significantly overline the lips in the same way as make-up.

How long do HD Lips last?

HD Lips gradually fade rather than disappearing at one fixed point. Longevity varies according to pigment retention, skin, sun exposure, lifestyle, skincare and how closely aftercare instructions are followed.

Maintenance colour boosts may be recommended once the pigment has faded sufficiently.

Do I need a consultation and patch test for HD Lips?

Yes. Skin Techniques requires a consultation and patch test before treatment.

You should also tell us if you have existing lip pigment, previous lip filler, allergies, relevant medical conditions or a history of cold sores. Lip tattooing can trigger a cold-sore outbreak, so medical advice may be required before your appointment.
