TREATMENT INFO

Masseter Treatment in Amersham, Buckinghamshire

The masseter muscles help you chew and can contribute to a wider-looking jaw, particularly when enlarged. Muscle-relaxing treatment aims to reduce their activity and, in suitable cases, gradually soften muscle-related jaw width. It may also help manage associated muscle tension, although clenching and teeth grinding can require dental care alongside any treatment. Please note: All anti-wrinkle and muscle-relaxing treatment appointments are subject to a consultation with our independent nurse prescriber to assess suitability and create a personalised plan with your safety and goals in mind.

What is our masseter treatment?

Masseter, part of our anti-wrinkle treatments, focuses on the large chewing muscles at the sides of your jaw. These muscles can become prominent and may be associated with jaw tension or habitual clenching. Your consultation will distinguish an aesthetic concern about jaw width from symptoms that may require assessment by your dentist or another healthcare professional.

This treatment is also popular for those looking to slim the jawline that looks wide due to an overactive masseter muscle. Our masseter treatment does not add volume. If you’re looking to change the jaw shape and enhance the jawline, jawline filler may be a better option.

What it helps

What can masseter treatment help with?

In suitable cases, treatment may gradually reduce the appearance of jaw width caused by enlarged masseter muscles. It may also help reduce muscular force or associated tension.

Treatment does not change the width of the jawbone and is not a guaranteed solution for teeth grinding. Dental protection and management of underlying causes may still be needed.

How it works

How does masseter treatment work?

Muscle-relaxing treatment reduces activity in the masseter muscles using anti-wrinkle product. Reduced activity can lessen muscular force, while changes in muscle size and the appearance of jaw width take longer to develop.

The outcome depends on muscle size, facial structure and the reason for treatment. Bone-related jaw width will not change. Existing skin laxity is also considered because reducing muscular bulk may affect the appearance of the lower face.

Our approach

Our approach to anti-wrinkle treatments

We consider your facial movement, skin and surrounding features to understand what’s contributing to your concern. Your treatment plan is tailored to your anatomy, priorities and goals, with clear advice about the changes treatment may achieve.

Your consultation will be with our in-house independent nurse prescriber, Helen Lada, who will review your medical history, assess suitability and explain your options. Treatment is only carried out where clinically appropriate.

Your questions

Masseter treatment FAQs

Is a wide jaw always caused by large masseter muscles?

No. Bone structure, soft tissue and facial proportions also influence jaw width. Treatment aimed at the masseter muscles will not change the underlying jawbone. If your concern is reduced definition rather than width, we can explain how jawline treatment differs.

What is the difference between jaw clenching and teeth grinding?

Clenching involves pressing the teeth together, while grinding involves rubbing them against each other. Both can occur during the day or while asleep and may be associated with tooth wear or jaw discomfort.

Should I see my dentist about teeth grinding?

Yes, particularly if you have tooth sensitivity, damage, persistent pain or problems with your bite. Your dentist can assess your teeth and advise whether protection, such as a suitable mouth guard, is needed. A consultation for muscle-relaxing treatment does not replace dental assessment.

Will treatment stop teeth grinding completely?

It cannot guarantee that grinding will stop. It may reduce muscular force in selected cases, but underlying causes and dental consequences may still require separate management. Our anti-wrinkle and muscle-relaxing treatment consultations include an assessment of suitability and a discussion of these limitations.
