About your concern

Understanding thin or uneven lips

Lips naturally vary in size, shape and symmetry. Some people have always had a smaller upper lip or an uneven border, while others notice changes in fullness and definition over time.

Ageing can affect lip volume, and facial movement may make the upper lip roll inwards when smiling. Colour also influences how clearly the lip border can be seen.

Distinguishing between volume, movement and colour helps us explain whether your concern is best addressed through shape, definition or a different approach.

Recommendations

Recommended treatments for thin or uneven lips

Lip Filler

Lip filler can add selected volume and refine the lip outline. It may suit a concern about fullness or certain differences in shape, with the amount chosen around your natural proportions.

Lip Flip

A lip flip consultation explores whether upper-lip movement contributes to a thinner appearance when smiling. It does not add filler volume. Any prescription treatment requires a consultation with our independent nurse prescriber, Helen Lada, and is only carried out where appropriate.

Lip Blush

Lip Blush uses cosmetic tattooing to enhance colour and definition. It can make the natural border look clearer, but it does not physically increase lip volume.

Your questions

Thin or uneven lips FAQs

Why does my upper lip disappear when I smile?

The way your upper lip moves can cause it to roll inwards. This is different from having low lip volume when your face is relaxed, so the cause should guide the options discussed.

Can lips become thinner with age?

Yes. Changes in the tissues supporting the lips can affect fullness and definition. Fine lines around the mouth may also make the border appear less distinct.

Is it normal for one side of my lips to look different?

Small differences are very common. Perfect symmetry is not a realistic goal, but selected differences may be softened. Wider concerns about balance are covered on our facial asymmetry page.

Can I improve lip definition without adding volume?

If colour and border visibility are the issue, Lip Blush may be worth exploring. If the concern is physical shape or support, cosmetic tattooing alone will not change that.
